Left is one of my Designs I wore to Derby Day at Flemington in 2013. Though I did wear this in Spring, if worn with a closed toe shoe and stockings it could be carried through to Autumn if you have a warm day.
Whilst working with the current trends in fashion, wear heavier fabrics like Wools, heavy cottons and even leather.
My favorite wool fabric to work with is 'Remus' a fine Italian wool. This is available from Tessuti fabrics ( store information available on previous blog post). As it is a fine wool there's no chance of looking chunky and it drapes beautifully.
My favorite Autumn colour schemes include black and white, Ivory and Navy. Though the Pantone colour of 2015 'Marsala' would be perfect for Autumn and I think I will be trying it on myself this year.
Pantone 18-1438 Marsala
I definitely recommend wearing closed toe shoes with stockings or tights and gloves that are appropriate for your Autumn look. These items will not be your best friend on the warmer days in Autumn, they are unfortunately imperative to hit the right note in your fashion outfit, especially if entering a Fashions the Field event.
Of course you cannot go the the races without stunning millinery. Millinery made out of Felt, satin or silk is perfect for Autumn. I find a lot of my felt hats in vintage stores and fairs, I brought the one pictured above from the Love Vintage fair in Melbourne.
Most importantly, It is important for Spring Racing or Autumn Racing to make sure you creative. Buy or borrow something that expresses your style and personality. I actually think expressing that is more important than sticking with the latest trends.
In the next couple of weeks I will talk about the best Autumn race days to attend in Sydney and which ones have Fashions on the Field events. I'm really looking forward to it, though have a lot of outfit preparation to go before I'm ready.
